The recipe book that came with it is pitiful. This is probably a very versatile machine, but the book basically gives you recipes for cold drinks and ice cream and so on. Finally I found instructions for crushing ice, in another piece of the enclosed information. But how about chopping nuts? Making flour? Making slaw? Chopppng vegetables? And so on.
Naturally I’d read the promotional material for the Vita Mix, which claims to do so much — and probably does. But I bought this machine because it has higher horsepower. Yet there is no video with the Blendtec, and no comprehensive book to explain how to get the most from it.
So I tried to find a Vita Mix recipe book or handbook, to no avail, although I did buy, through an eBay site, a Vita Mix demonstrators’ cookbook for $25 — so annoying to have to do that, and pay so much. The booklet by no means told how to make all the things pictured in the Vita Mix sales material. At least it told how to make a sorbet, although now how to adapt that or any other recipe for a low-carb diet. [Vita Mix claims to do that as well.]
The Blendtec is good for making the soupy part of a BARF diet for dogs, but probably no better than a Vita Mix.
Overall, if I had it to do over, I’d get a Vita Mix. It doesn’t have 3 horsepower, but the horsepower it does have is horsepower you can use more often.

We bought this item as a way of saving a few dollars over the well established Vita Mix blender, and boy were we sorry, and quickly returned it. After having seen the demo of the Blend Tec we thought that it seemed to be on the same level, but after getting the unit home and trying it on several different concoctions, we found that it truly was unworthy of the money we paid for it, and returned it within about 10 days of it’s purchase.
The lid was awkward, difficult to seat in the top. It was overly noisey. You don’t need a vortec engine to power a blender, although this has one. If you don’t watch it constantly while using it it will work it’s way right off your counter. Upon start up, it goes from zero to bazillion in .000009 seconds, so you better have a handle on it from the get-go. And clean up is not as easy as they make it sound. It seemed to smell of an overly worked electrical component also, when trying to grind up ice or carrots, but maybe that was because it was still new and working off it’s “new car smell”. It was too much disappointment for us and for a blender, we didn’t want to get stuck with a $400.00 piece of kitchen real estate that would eventually end up in the thrift store.

I used my friends quite a few times and they are great, but frankly they are one of the ugliest blenders you will ever see, looking like a reject from the 80s. I guess they are going for that whole engineered machinery thing, but unlike Dyson vacuum cleaners, instead of looking distinctive, they just look bad.
If you blend ice a lot, and you either will put away your blender or don’t really care what your kitchen looks like, then get this blender. It is the best by far. I wish they would rip off the Waring Pro’s classic looks though…

I bought the unit a couple of months ago thinking that I would make smoothies once in a while. I do. I also use it to mill flax, grind pepper, liquify onions and garlic for recipes (my kids hate finding any onion in their food). I even made pate in it. But not only do I use it but the kids use it at least two or three times a day for smoothies or shakes. So far, no complaints and the novelty has NOT worn off. It makes a great iced cappucino too! Make margaritas like the pros!
Its a lot of money, but I think its worth it. I’ve tried the vitamix 5000 and prefer the blendtec.

I bought a Blendtec and used it for about 2 weeks then sent it back. What a disaster! I love making my own nut butters and with the Blendtec it is such a pain. I have also noticed that is is horrible blending frozen fruit and whole fruits. I have a friend that used to own a Jamba Juice and they used to use Blendtec but had so many problems they went strictly with a Vita-Mix. I saw the Vita-Mix demo at a Costco and realized why all the smoothie shops use them. They are so much more durable, versitile, and easy to use. They circulate better, their warranty is so much better and their customer service is better. I have been using the Vita-Mix for years now and I love it. I use it everyday! It is the best machine I have ever bought
